Kaduna 2027: Former Governor Yaro Accepts Pressure to Join Senate Race

By Idris Umar, Zaria

A fresh political development is unfolding in Kaduna State as former governor, Dr. Muktar Labaran Yaro, has accepted a coordinated appeal by local government chairmen from Zone One to contest for the Senate under the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The move, seen by observers as a significant boost to the APC’s prospects in the zone, followed a high-level visit by the chairmen, led by their association chairman, Hon. Abubakar Jamilu Albani Samaru, to the former governor’s residence in the Kaura area of Zaria.

The delegation had earlier convened at the office of Hon. Jamilu Ahmed (JAGA), who later hosted and formally introduced the team during the visit.

Presenting the group’s position, Hon. Albani said the appeal was driven by widespread demand across Zone One, stressing that Dr. Yaro’s track record in governance, reputation for integrity, and leadership experience made him the preferred choice to represent the zone at the National Assembly.

“We are here on behalf of our people to respectfully urge you to answer this call to service. Your experience and credibility are exactly what our zone needs at this critical time,” he stated.

Responding, Dr. Yaro expressed appreciation for the show of confidence, describing the visit as both humbling and inspiring. He reiterated that his political journey has always been shaped by public demand rather than personal ambition.

“I have never lobbied for any position. It is always the people who call, and I respond,” he said.

In what could reshape the senatorial contest in Zone One, the former governor formally accepted the request, while calling for prayers and continued support from stakeholders.

“I accept this responsibility with a sense of duty and commitment to serve Kaduna State and Nigeria to the best of my ability,” he added.

Key stakeholders who spoke in support of the appeal included Hon. Dauda Iliya, Chairman of Kudan Local Government; Hon. Jamilu Ahmed (JAGA); and Barrister Hajiya A’isha Muhammad, all of whom emphasized unity and strategic leadership ahead of the elections.

The gathering attracted a large number of APC supporters, reflecting growing grassroots momentum behind the former governor’s potential candidacy.

Hon. Yakubu Soja delivered the vote of thanks, commending Dr. Yaro for what he described as a timely and decisive acceptance.

Political analysts say the development may alter the dynamics of the Senate race in Kaduna North, positioning the APC for a potentially competitive outing.

The meeting ended peacefully.
