The national hunters’ group, United Hunters Association of Nigeria, has said that attacks by gunmen are increasing in Giwa Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
The National Chairman of the association, Malam Taju, told journalists that members of the group engaged the bandits in several confrontations across the area during the past week.
He said that during one of the clashes, the gunmen shot one of their members, who is currently receiving treatment in a hospital.
According to him, the attack came as a result of the pressure the hunters have been mounting on the bandits day and night. He added that during one of the encounters, the hunters succeeded in recovering items that had been stolen from residents.
The chairman called on the governments of Kaduna State to emulate measures taken in other areas by providing volunteer security groups like theirs with protective equipment to strengthen security operations.
He stressed that they carry out the work voluntarily and will not stand by and watch criminals continue to kill their parents and community members, whether the government supports them or not.
Malam Taju also appreciated the cooperation they receive from the public as well as security agencies, including the military and the police.
He pledged that the association would continue to intensify efforts to support security operations in Giwa Local Government Area and across Kaduna State.
One of the hunters Malam Sarki Lurwanu who was shot confirmed that the bandits injured him in the thigh during a clash in a community within the area. He said he is now recovering gradually by the grace of God.
The Secretary of the association, Comrade Ibrahim Isa Ahmad, also confirmed that bandit attacks are increasing in Kaduna State, particularly in Giwa Local Government Area.
He called on residents to report any suspicious individuals in their communities to assist the group in improving security.
In conclusion, he urged the government to look into the challenges facing the association as they carry out their mission of protecting lives and property.
He prayed for God’s protection over Nigeria as a whole.
