The Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Education in collaboration with the World Bank, has launched the IDEAS–TVET Programme to train 300 youths in Zaria in vocational and technical skills that will help them secure employment or start their own businesses.
The launch ceremony was held on February 25, 2026, at the Sulaiman Balarabe Hall of the Federal University of Education, Zaria in Kaduna State. The event was attended by key stakeholders, training providers, government representatives, and beneficiaries of the programme.
The IDEAS–TVET Programme is designed to strengthen Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) by equipping young people with industry-relevant skills. The goal is to reduce youth unemployment, enhance skills development, and promote sustainable economic growth.
The programme will be implemented through selected training institutions, including:
Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology (NITT)
The Directorate of Skills Development and Partnerships of the Federal University of Education, Zaria
Ajoke Ayisat Afolabi Foundation
The selected youths will undergo six months of training, divided into two phases: three months of practical, hands-on training using modern industry-standard equipment, followed by three months of internship placement in companies to gain real-world work experience.
Speaking at the event, Hajiya Adama Haruna Abdulmalik, who is leading the Ajoke Ayisat Afolabi Foundation in the programme, expressed gratitude for the foundation’s inclusion and commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for initiating the programme, describing it as timely and impactful. She also urged the beneficiaries to remain committed and make the most of the opportunity.
Reports indicate that the Ajoke Ayisat Afolabi Foundation is one of the few foundations in the area actively engaged in hands-on vocational training, as well as providing support services in health, education, and life counseling.
In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Education, Zaria, Professor Yahaya Bankure, offered his blessings for the programme and commended all stakeholders involved in making the initiative a reality.
