Comrade Shu’aibu Ahmad Halilu has emerged as the Chairman of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria branch, after securing 1,209 votes in the association’s branch elections.
Halilu defeated his closest rival who polled 654 votes in the keenly contested election conducted across various voting clusters within the university.
Also elected during the exercise was Dr. Hassan Mukhtar, who emerged as Vice Chairman with 1,051 votes, defeating Ahmed Ismail who scored 800 votes.
For the position of Secretary, Comrade Bashir Yakubu Dan Bassay won with 571 votes, while Comrade Mansur Garba was elected Treasurer with 1,306 votes. Comrade Shehu Namadi clinched the position of Financial Secretary with 1,386 votes.
The position of Public Relations Officer (PRO) was won by Hasiya Ali of ABU FM, who secured 737 votes.
Other officials elected include Aminu Mohammad Lawal as Assistant Secretary with 607 votes, Nuhu Shu’aibu as Ex-Officio with 1,770 votes, Garba Haruna (Ability) as Trustee with 969 votes, and Mairo Musa who emerged Women Coordinator with 951 votes.
In his acceptance speech, the new Chairman, Comrade Halilu, thanked members of the association for the confidence reposed in him to lead the union.
He pledged that women would receive 30 percent of all appointments and engagements during his tenure and assured members of an inclusive leadership style.
Halilu also extended a hand of fellowship to all contestants, urging them to join hands with the new leadership in moving the association forward.
According to him, his administration will focus on training, capacity development and good governance that will benefit members of the association.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the Vice Chairman of SSANU North-West Zone, Comrade Sabo Balarabe Wudil, commended members of the ABU branch for their peaceful conduct during the elections.
He praised the electoral committee for ensuring that the process was free and fair, noting that members across the various clusters of the university turned out to vote in an orderly manner.
Wudil said the conduct of the election shows the commitment of members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities in Ahmadu Bello University to democratic principles and responsible leadership.
He therefore called on members to give maximum support to the new leadership just as they did to the outgoing executives in order to ensure the continued progress of the association.
