The wife of the Zamfara State Governor, Hajiya Huriyya Dauda Lawal, who also serves as the National Secretary of the First Ladies Against Cancer (FLAC) initiative, has launched a breast cancer awareness campaign for female secondary school students in Gusau, the Zamfara State capital.
In her address during the event, Hajiya Huriyya expressed her delight at being with the students to commemorate World Breast Cancer Awareness Day, whose theme for this year is “Every Step Counts.”
She explained that the theme reminds women that every woman is valuable and deserves care, compassion, and equal opportunity.
This year’s global theme, ‘A Shared Purpose in Unity,’ reminds us that despite our differences, unity remains our greatest strength,” she said.
Hajiya Huriyya noted that women, especially those in rural areas, face several health challenges, including breast and cervical cancer. She urged women and young girls to regularly undergo medical checkups to ensure early detection of such diseases.
Take good care of your health, encourage one another, and be a light to other women in the future.
The knowledge you are acquiring today will help you make informed decisions that protect your health and the health of others,” she added.
The Governor’s wife extended her special appreciation to FLAC for their continued efforts in raising awareness and supporting cancer patients across Nigeria. She assured that her office would continue to carry out awareness programs and encourage early testing and detection of breast cancer.
Hajiya Huriyya also commended her husband, Governor Dauda Lawal, for his visionary leadership and commitment to improving healthcare delivery in Zamfara State.
His efforts ensure that women, children, and vulnerable groups have access to quality healthcare, reflecting his compassion and dedication to the people of Zamfara,” she said.

Meanwhile, Dr. Khadijat delivered an enlightening lecture on the dangers of breast cancer, its symptoms, and treatment options. She educated the students on how women can conduct self-breast examinations and the importance of visiting hospitals for regular checkups and vaccination when necessary.
