Governor Uba Sani Has Resolved 15-Year-Old Challenges in Kaduna Tertiary Institutions — Rector

The Rector of Nuhu Bamalli Polytechnic, Zaria, Engr. Dr. Mohammed Kabir Abdullahi, has commended the Executive Governor of Kaduna State, Senator Dr. Uba Sani, CON, for addressing what he described as “the biggest challenges of remuneration and retirement age” that had persisted for about 15 years in the state’s tertiary institutions.

Dr. Abdullahi made the remark shortly after the joint congress of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnics (SSANIP), where the unions unanimously agreed to suspend their indefinite strike action.

The suspension followed the governor’s approval of all the demands presented by the unions.

In a statement signed by the Secretary, Information and Protocol Unit, Abdullahi Ibrahim Shehu, the Rector said the governor’s decision demonstrated his commitment and passion for educational development, industrial harmony, and the welfare of workers in Kaduna State’s tertiary institutions.

According to the statement, the demands approved by the governor include:

1. Implementation of CONPCASS and CONTEDISS salary structures for Nuhu Bamalli Polytechnic, Zaria; the College of Education, Gidan Waya; and State Schools of Health, in line with what the Federal Government approved for federal polytechnics and colleges of education since 2009.

2. Implementation of 65 years retirement age for all staff of the three tertiary institutions, as approved by the Federal Government.

Dr. Abdullahi noted that the governor’s intervention was highly commendable, considering the current economic challenges facing the state.

He further appreciated the efforts of the Honourable Commissioner for Education, Prof. Abubakar Sani Sambo, and other top government officials for their roles in achieving the breakthrough.

The Rector also commended the leadership of the staff unions for conducting themselves peacefully and in accordance with labour laws throughout the strike period.

He congratulated the staff of Nuhu Bamalli Polytechnic and other tertiary institutions in the state for the governor’s benevolent gesture and urged them to reciprocate it with renewed dedication and commitment to duty for the overall progress of their institutions and Kaduna State.
