ASUU ABU Branch Embarks on Two-Week Warning Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) chapter in Zaria, has embarked on a 14-day warning strike starting today, Monday, October 13, 2025. This action follows the directive from the National Executive Council (NEC) of ASUU.
Speaking to journalists after the union’s meeting at the university, the ABU ASUU Chairman, Professor Haruna Jibrin, stated that the strike is aimed at pressuring the Federal Government to complete the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement between ASUU and the government, based on the recommendations of the Nimi Briggs Committee concluded in 2021.
Professor Jibrin also expressed deep concern over the reported mistreatment of ASUU members at Kogi State University (KSU) and Lagos State University (LASU). He further demanded the release of three and a half months' worth of withheld salaries owed to university lecturers due to previous industrial actions.
"This is a warning strike," Professor Jibrin cautioned, "and it may escalate into a full-blown indefinite strike if the government fails to meet our demands in due time."
Our correspondent toured various parts of the university to observe the situation on the ground. As of the time of filing this report, academic activities had completely come to a halt.
A student, Aliyu Ibrahim, expressed his frustration, saying:
"For God’s sake, the government should resolve issues with the lecturers so our education doesn’t collapse. I hope this situation is settled quickly without wasting more time."
