Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has distributed 3,000 tree seedlings to neighbouring communities as part of its commitment to promoting environmental sustainability and strengthening climate resilience.
The initiative was unveiled during the university's World Environment Day celebration, which featured a symposium and a tree-planting campaign aimed at encouraging environmental stewardship and ecosystem restoration.
Speaking at the event, the Vice-Chancellor of ABU, Professor Adamu Ahmed, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Professor Bello Sabo, said the university had taken proactive steps to institutionalise environmental management through the establishment of an Environmental Unit to coordinate sustainability initiatives across the campus.
He reaffirmed the institution's commitment to creating a cleaner, greener and more resilient environment through strategic partnerships and community engagement.
Chairman of the occasion and Chairman of the Kaduna State Local Government Service Board, Professor Aminu Ladan Sharehu, described environmental protection as a shared responsibility that requires the collective efforts of governments, institutions, communities and individuals.
He said the Local Government Service Board, in collaboration with all 23 Local Government Areas in Kaduna State, would continue to partner with relevant stakeholders in safeguarding the environment while promoting sustainable livelihoods and economic development.
Professor Sharehu noted that tree planting remains one of the most effective and affordable strategies for combating climate change, restoring degraded ecosystems and securing a healthier future for generations to come.
The celebration was held under the theme, "Inspired by Nature: Ecosystem Restoration for a Resilient, Adaptable and Sustainable Microclimate in ABU," highlighting the university's resolve to champion environmental conservation through practical action.
The event attracted key stakeholders in environmental management, including officials of the Kaduna State Ministry of Environment, the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) Project, environmental experts, academics and development partners.
